As you know IGLTA members represent all facets of the travel and tourism industry. Travel related organizations become part of IGLTA and give the world of LGBT travel a unified voice. This voice, that has grown and strengthened over the past 27 years, has skyrocketed globally and has helped IGLTA become the leading global organization dedicated to connecting businesses in the LGBT tourism industry. With that said, we would like to say THANK YOU.
Our Annual Convention is where our unified voice gather in one place and revel in how far our collaborative effort has grown and developed over the years. This year our 27th Annual Convention – “2010 The Many Colors of LGBT Travel” – will be held in fashion-haven Antwerp, Belgium from 23-26 June. The event is the leading conference in the world of LGBT tourism and will position your company as a leader in this market. The convention includes numerous educational sessions and seminars, a trade show, tours of the host country, and of course the annual gala dinner.
As a member of the IGLTA family, your registration is discounted and can easily be done at the convention website, where you can also find more information. This is the time and the place we’re unified and reunited and where we can all look at each other and say, “Job Well Done.” Our convention is a highly regarded and renowned global event and your attendance would be greatly appreciated because without our members, we wouldn’t have been able to reach this pinnacle.
We look forward to seeing you in Belgium.
Best Regards,
IGLTA

Laurence Bernstein is the managing partner of Protean Strategies, and is one of Canada's best known and respected strategic planners. A graduate of Cornell University, he is a regular contributor to Marketing magazine and has published articles in numerous business publications in Canada, USA and Germany. |
Plan B: When it all goes terribly wrong (Part 2)
Last month we asked the question: What would you do if events around your LGBT marketing program went terribly wrong, and this resulted in a threat to your brand? Examples of these events stretch from your ad provokes a few letters of outrage from a conservative customer base in a specific region (with and without support of local sales force) to the LGBT organization you have sponsored taking a political position that your firm is uncomfortable with and you believe the general market will also reject (e.g. Pride parade invites participation from The North American Man Boy Love Association, that promotes Pedophilia).
The answer to the question is both easy and complex, but is based on first principles: why is your company investing in an LGBT strategy in the first place. The core of the answer is a point on a scale that shows “GOAL: Build Sales in the LGBT Segment” on the one end and “GOAL: Demonstrate our company’s political support for gays and lesbians in our community” on the other end. Most companies have a balance between these two objectives, including a strong business building component with a sincere desire to improve the business environment for gay and lesbian employees.
To make the most appropriate go-forward decisions, the company needs to ask itself: if this happened in the general market, what would we do? For instance if you launched a new television or radio ad and a few people sent letters or blogged or tweeted saying they disapproved of the ad for one reason or another, would your company immediately cancel the ad. There are companies that would, and that being the case those companies should do the same thing when their LGBT advertising attracts negative response . But most companies allow for the fact that in every TV campaign there will be a few letters or tweets of disapproval, and these companies reply to the complainants explaining the company position (or, more likely, simply write the complainants off as kooks). As a general rule, then, brands operating in the LGBT space primarily to return profits, should not allow a few disapproving letters, blogs or tweets to influence their decision. This has little to do with principles, but is based on the assumption that if the LGBT investment made sense before these letters, it still makes sense, so why stop?
Looking at the second case described above: by any token most people are repulsed by an association such as NAMBLA. However, some companies might take the “community support” position, and not take action (i.e. cancel the sponsorship) because their sense of community support is unconditional and to select, or edit, viewpoints of the LGBT community would be censorship and might cause hard feelings.
Again, we suggest asking the question: if this were the general market, what would you do? Suppose your company sponsors a rock concert, and the night before the event the leader of the featured band outs himself as a Marxist, tirading against the capitalist system, calling for workers to unite universally through trade unions, etc. He announces that he will be featuring his “Manifesto of Revolutionary Action” at the concert. I doubt it would take your company long to withdraw any indication that your brand is associated with this event – even if it meant walking away from the investment with no hope of getting your money back.
Clearly the same applies in the gay community. If there is a political, social or moral point of view being expressed at an event that you disapprove of, the decision should always be to walk away: first of all, if you disagree with the position, it is wrong to support an event that propagates it; secondly, you would avoid the danger of your brand being associated in the general market with the position; and thirdly, given the market realities, chances are that if you as a major sponsor and other sponsors withdraw support, the organizers would change their position on allowing (in this case NAMBLA) to participate.
Winners all round. |
